What is Service Learning
Service-Learning links academic courses and voluntarism to benefit both students and community. Service-Learning builds relationships between academic theory and “real-world” application, fosters a sense of civic responsibility, and kindles an interest in lifelong learning. Knowledge, personal growth, and skills developed through service-learning are assessed as learning outcomes and transfer to professional life.

Michigan Campus Compact
Michigan Campus Compact is the state’s support organization for service learning in higher education. Thirty-one colleges in Michigan belong to MCC, including Schoolcraft College. MCC is also a member of the national organization, Campus Compact.
Michigan Campus Compact “promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.”
Annually, one or more Schoolcraft students represent the college as members of SCAN, the Student Committee for Action Network.
Bugs, Frogs & Water
Friends of the Rouge (FOTR), is a southeastern Michigan non-profit organization “dedicated to promoting restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River through education and citizen involvement.” Annually, Schoolcraft students volunteer to participate in FOTR’s Frog and Toad Survey, Spring Bug Hunt, Water Monitoring and Rouge Rescue activities. Schoolcraft College has adopted Bell Creek, part of the Rouge River sub-watershed, and participates in the FOTR longitudinal study.
Plymouth Community Arts Council
The Plymouth Community Arts Council (PCAC) provides quality “fine and performing arts, and cultural opportunities to the greater Western Wayne County community. Programs and activities focus on ensuring accessibility to all the arts by all ages. The PCAC mission is to develop and to promote the appreciation and accessibility of the Arts for everyone in the greater community and in doing so, encourage and foster artistic excellence.”
Schoolcraft College students participate in the Art Volunteer Program (AVP) bringing art culture boxes to elementary school classrooms and developing new culture boxes to add to the collection. Schoolcraft students also help with the annual PCAC benefit/auction.
Business and Professional Women International
(BPW) has been the voice of working women since 1918. In the Canton BPW Association, as in other chapters of this international organization, women help women “achieve goals through networking, leadership training, legislative action and educational support. The mission of BPW is to achieve equity of all women in the workplace through Advocacy, Education and Community Service.”
Reality Store is a personal finance simulation experience that the Canton Business and Professional Women association (BPW) brings to local middle schools in fall and winter semesters. Schoolcraft college students from math, English, and business classes volunteer to run various store booths where participants purchase housing, child care, transportation and other necessities. Each semester, over 70 Schoolcraft students participate to bring this program to middle school students.
In Norwayne area public schools (located in Westland, Mi.), 95% of children meet requirements for free or reduced lunch. Schoolcraft College partners with a church in that community that sponsors the Red Wagon Early Childhood Literacy Project, which provides literacy resources and positive influences for academically at-risk children and impoverished adults. Many who reside in Norwayne (also known as “shack town”), do not have the funds for the things that make for happy childhood memories; summer camp, family vacations, swimming in a lake or pool, or visits to libraries.
Educational research indicates that if children have access to books in the spring and summer months their reading skills will be enhanced and they will be less likely to lose knowledge gained during the school year. The children there get to know our students and faculty, and run out to meet us, frequently asking for our book recommendations. The absolutely best part of our volunteer experience was to see the smiling faces of the children and watch them reading on their front steps as we pulled our wagons away.
