Kids on Campus celebrates 30th Anniversary; register now for a summer of fun

From its most humble beginnings in 1979 as “Adventures in Learning,” which featured only a dozen classes or so, primarily geared towards Talented and Gifted students, and a hundred students in grades three through nine, Kids on Campus has grown tremendously. In 2008 nearly 800 children in the first through ninth grades registered for one or more (and sometimes three or four) sessions during three weeks in July.

This year’s 30th anniversary Kids on Campus summer session promises to be even bigger and better than ever with a new twist. Kids on Campus 2009 will feature a ‘summer camp’ format where each session will consist of an exciting week-long program centered on a particular subject.

The Kids on Campus program is designed to inspire a desire to learn while nurturing a child’s curiosity and creativity. With emphasis on hands-on experimentation and maximizing the opportunity to focus on one special area of interest, Kids on Campus provides some very unique learning opportunities that generally can’t be found in the traditional classroom.

Sessions include everything from Robotics, to Myth Busters, X-treme Rocketry, Culinary Arts Boot Camp, Create Your Own Video Game, Aviation and Aerospace, Camp Scrubs (with a healthcare focus), Machine Adventures in High-Tech Manufacturing, Crime Detectives, Art Arcade, Acting Adventures, All Star Chess and Science Safari, just to name a few.

In addition to the Kids on Campus sessions, the Learning Assistance Center of Schoolcraft College also offers a series of Academic Skills Workshops for students in the sixth through twelfth grades. These workshops include skills enhancement sessions for study skills, English, basic math, algebra, intermediate algebra, geometry, advanced algebra and trigonometry as well as Keyboarding and Basic Word Processing; Successful Reading Skills for Middle School Students, Pre-Algebra and Algebra Readiness, and Navigating the College Application Process.
