Students, faculty and community invited to special "Stop the Violence" panel discussion event Thurs., Mar. 21
Pageturners, Schoolcraft College's book discussion group, along with the college's Counseling Department, will host a special interactive "Stop the Violence" panel discussion event in addition to its regular book discussion sessions this month.
Focusing on the 2003 novel by Lionel Shriver, We Need to Talk about Kevin, about a fictional school massacre, students, faculty and the community are invited to attend the Stop the Violence event on Thurs., Mar. 21 from 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. in the McDowell Center on the college's main campus in Livonia. "Recent history has shown us that college campuses are not immune to acts of violence," said Elzbieta Rybicka, faculty coordinator for Pageturners and English faculty member. "As a campus community, and members of our broader communities, we can learn to identify early warning signs of violence and be prepared with appropriate responses."
Written from the perspective of the killer's mother, Eva Khatchadourian, We Need to Talk about Kevin, documents Eva's attempt to come to terms with her son, Kevin, and the murders he committed. In addition to the panel discussion, students, faculty and the community are also invited to attend one of the three regular book discussion opportunities, Thurs., Mar. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Radcliff Center in Garden City; Mon., Mar. 25 at 4 p.m. and Tues., Mar. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Bradner Library on the college's main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads.
