Schoolcraft offers free math workshops in January
The Learning Assistance Center at Schoolcraft College is offering four math preparation/refresher workshops in January in preparation for the start of winter 2013 semester classes. The workshops are free and open to anyone planning on taking a college-level math course at Schoolcraft College or any college or university.
Jump Start 1000, which will be held Mon., Jan. 7 and Fri., Jan. 11 from 1-3 p.m. is created for those entering Math 045* (Schoolcraft course) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of the four fundamental operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers. In addition to Math 045*, students taking the Basic Math Refresher, Pharmacy Technician, and the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and GED preparation classes will benefit from Jump Start 1000.
Jump Start 2000, which will be held Mon., Jan. 7 and Thurs., Jan. 10 from 1-3 p.m. is created for those entering Math 047, 101, 105, 106 or 111; Accounting 103, 201 or 202;* (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of fractions, decimal, percents, and order of operations.
Jump Start 3000, which will be held Mon., Jan. 7 and Wed., Jan. 9 from 1-3 p.m. is created for those entering Math 053 or 55; Accounting 103, 201 or 202;* (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of basic integer operations, order of operations, expressions, and equation solving.
Jump Start 4000, which will be held Mon., Jan. 7 and Tues., Jan. 8 from 1-3 p.m. is created for those entering Math 105, 106 or 113* (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of integer operations, expressions, linear equation solving, graphing, factoring polynomials, and metric conversion. In addition to Math 105, 106 and 113, students taking Chemistry 51, Economics 201 and 202, Physics 051 and 104, Electronic Technology 137 and 145, Biomedical Engineering Technology 125, or Nursing 102, 104 and 110* will benefit from Jump Start 400.
“We want to give math students all of the tools they need to be successful in their college courses,” said Terri Lamb, mathematics learning specialist at Schoolcraft College. “For some students these workshops can serve as a timely refresher for the skills and knowledge they need just before the start of the semester. For other students, the Jump Start sessions will provide an extra boost of confidence walking into their next math class.”
The Jump Start sessions are free and open to anyone, however registration is necessary. For more information or to register call 734-462-4436. Space is limited. The workshops will be held on the college's main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads. Jump Start is made possible through a grant from the Schoolcraft College Foundation.
