Gerard Mellnick is one of two faculty members from Schoolcraft College to earn the 2012 NISOD Excellence Award (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development). Gerard is an associate professor teaching a range of subjects including business, accounting and ethics.

Father's Day Brunch and Concert with Dave Bennett Quartet
The Dave Bennett Quartet will be the featured performers at a special Father’s Day Brunch, Sun., Jun. 16 at noon, Tickets for the brunch are $27.50 per person and proceeds benefit the annual Michigan Jazz Festival on Sun., Jul. 21. Following the meal the quartet, including clarinetist Dave Bennett, pianist Cliff Monear, drummer Doug Cobb and bassist Kurt Krahnke, will take the stage.

On Wednesday, December 5 the Motor City Brass Quintet will make an encore performance at Schoolcraft College as part of the Noon Music Concert Series. On Monday, November 12 John L. Titus will be at Schoolcraft College to discuss his book, Losing Alicia: A Father’s Journey after 9/11. This special Meet the Author event will begin at 1:15 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center on the college’s main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads. Meet Michael J. Wisniewski, Jr., Alumnus and Difference Maker
Michael J. Wisniewski, Jr. came to Schoolcraft College via a relatively circuitous route. After suffering a catastrophic injury while working on the assembly line of an auto company and three subsequent major surgeries, Mike was dealing with a significant depression and lack of direction.
Terri Lamb, Faculty Facilitator and Difference Maker
“If anyone makes a difference at Schoolcraft College its Terri Lamb,” said Steven Kleiman in his nomination of Terri Lamb, Faculty Facilitator. “Terri saw something special in me that I have never seen in myself before. She helped me to become a better student. And it’s not just me. She has the ability to make everyone around her feel better about themselves and build their confidence to do great things.”
July 2 is payment deadline for students who registered early for Fall 2012 credit classes
When the start of Fall 2012 registration was moved up from June to April, students who registered were required to make payment by July 2. As the payment deadline nears, students are being reminded to make payment and avoid being dropped from their classes July 3.

Schoolcraft hosts 9th Annual Senior Expo on May 22
The Ninth Annual Senior Expo, sponsored by the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers, Comfort Dental Spa, Schoolcraft College and the VisTaTech Center, will be held Tuesday, May 22 from 9 a.m - 2 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center on Schoolcraft's main campus in Livonia. Numerous workshops are scheduled throughout the day and dozens of organizations will be on hand sharing information. The Senior Expo is free and open to the public.
Schoolcraft College celebrates 47th annual Commencement Ceremony
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, Schoolcraft College celebrated its 47th annual Commencement Ceremony at Compuware Arena in Plymouth, MI. Of the 1,696 students eligible to participate (those earning an associate degree or certificate), 440 graduates donned their caps and gowns and invited friends and family to celebrate their accomplishments.

"The Undertaking: Life Studies from the Dismal Trade," by local author, Thomas Lynch, is the focus of Pageturners book club's March selection. Students, staff, faculty and the community are invited to explore "The Undertaking" this month, including two discussions (March 22 and 26), a viewing of an episode of Frontline about the book (March 21), and a Meet the Author event with Lynch (March 27).
Seeking nominations for Difference Makers as part of 50th anniversary celebration
We are seeking nominations for "Difference Makers," recognizing those who have made an impact on the collegeand those, by virtue of their relationship with Schoolcraft College, have had a significant impact on their community. Nominees can be current students, alumni or former students, instructors, staff members, donors, volunteers, board members, friends, community leaders, etc. Nominations can be made through March 31.
New Fitness Center continues to take shape
Construction continues on the college’s brand new, 11,000 square foot state of the art Fitness Center, which is scheduled to open early in 2012.
College launches mobile Web site as part of 'Stay Connected' campaign
The latest addition to the college's 'Stay Connected' campaign is SCmobile, a Web site delivering mobile-friendly content to Schoolcraft students. Bookmarking the site puts an icon on the mobile device, enabling the user to quickly access content, including an events calendar, department directory and a list of individual classes that are cancelled for that day. Other aspects of the 'Stay Connected' campagin include student email and a text/email emergency notifcation system.
A'Tribute to Donald Morelock' is theme of free concert on December 7
A 'Tribute to Donald Morelock' is the next performance in the Noon Concert Series hosted by Schoolcraft College. Former students of Morelock will perform a variety of selections honoring their teacher and mentor on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Grammy-nominated trumpeter to perform at concert April 18
A special spring-themed concert Monday, April 18, 2011 will feature world-renowned trumpeter, Wayne Bergeron. The “Up Jumped Spring” concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center. The concert will also feature performances by the college’s Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Improvisation Combo, and Synthesizer Ensemble. DeWolf's visit is sponsored by Pageturners Book Discussion group and is one of several activities in January and February exploring issues of slave trade. The event is free and open to the public.

Art enthusiasts have an opportunity this week to help support the Schoolcraft College Foundation with 20% of the current exhibition’s artwork sales to be donated by the exhibition’s host, Art & Ideas Gallery. College hosts first "Human Library" on March 15
On Monday, March 15, Schoolcraft College will host its first Human Library event from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the college's VisTaTech Center.

International Institute: The Armenian Genocide and Its Impact Today on Feb. 23
Marjorie K. Nanian, adjunct professor of political science, will use documentary images as she explains how events leading up to and including World War I continues to impact the world today. This presentation is a part of the International Institute's Focus: Middle East program.
"Down in the D!" historical presentation and luncheon is Feb. 19

Pink Zone on Feb. 17 proceeds will support breast cancer research
The Pink Zone event features a doubleheader of basketball versus Henry Ford Community College. All proceeds from the evening’s festivities will benefit the Kay Yow WBCA Breast Cancer Research Fund. Tickets for the basketball games, which begin at 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men, are only $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

Art exhibit features faculty member's photos and paintings

Courage and confidence to continue
One of the best things Swati Rajpurohit says she received from Schoolcraft College was the “courage and confidence to continue my education.” She worked as a student aid in the Schoolcraft library and attended the college after moving to the U.S. from India in 2000. A pre-school daughter and other responsibilities limited her to taking a few classes at a time.
Omar Aragones - Inspiration Comes In Many Forms
When Omar Aragones’ dad received treatment for a stroke and back problems, his son received inspiration for his career path. “When I took my dad for therapy, the physical therapist at the clinic talked with me about his own experience. He said that I reminded him of himself when he was younger and that he thought I’d be a good physical therapist.”

For Mansi it’s all about helping people. “I’m studying nursing because it’s a field that gives you a chance to really help others with the realities of life,” she said. A student at Schoolcraft College since her move from India to the United States in, 2004, Mansi has been hard at work on an associate degree in nursing.

Soccer, volleyball coaches named Coach of the Year
Schoolcraft College sports teams continued their winning ways this fall in men's soccer and women's volleyball. Men's soccer won the Michigan Community College Athletic Association state championship. Women's volleyball won the MCCAA state, conference and regional championships and finished third in the country.
