College hosts first "Human Library" on March 15
On Monday, March 15, 2010, Schoolcraft College will host its first Human Library event from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the college's VisTaTech Center.
The Human Library movement, until this year known as the Living Library, was founded in Denmark in 2000. Human Library events afford participants the opportunity to “check out” a book on an interesting or controversial topic. They'll be one of two types, those like a Business and Marketing “book” that can give you information about what a career in the field requires, and those that give you a chance to meet someone you might otherwise never know, ask questions and learn what makes them the person they are. Human Library books are people. A “book” will have identified him/herself as knowledgeable about a subject and is willing to share his/her experiences and perspectives, and answer questions from participants. In this way, those who attend have a non-confrontational opportunity to explore and/or discover their preconceptions and prejudices.
Not every “book” will be available every hour. A list of the subjects and the times they are available are listed below. Each of the 12 tables each hour can accomodate seven "readers." New sessions begin at the top of each hour.
Others who have done Human Library programs say that they are invigorating and you can “really feel something happening.” Instructors are welcome incorporate the Human Library event into their classes. Plans are to host a "Human Library" in each of the fall and winter semesters in coming years and add more subjects and times.
