Sounds of the Season - Free Concerts

Music lovers have three wonderful opportunities to enjoy the sounds of the season, courtesy of Schoolcraft College’s Music Department. All of the concerts are free and open to the public. Donations at the door, however, are greatly appreciated and are used to help fund scholarships for music students.

Wind Ensemble, Dec. 9
On Sunday, December 9, 2007, The Wind Ensemble will entertain at 7:30 p.m. at the Radcliff Center in Garden City. The concert will include the works of John P. Sousa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Hector Villa-Lobos, Elliott Del Borgo, LeRoy Anderson and, of course, the holiday favorite “Christmas Song” by Mel Torme and Robert Wells.

Jazz Band and Synthesizer Band, Dec 10
On Monday, December 10, 2007, the Jazz Band and the Synthesizer Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the DiPonio Room at VisTaTech on the Livonia campus.

The 18-member Jazz Band will perform a variety of selections, including several holiday favorites, composed by such renowned talents as Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, Stevie Wonder, Antonio Carlos-Jobim, Isaac Hayes and Thad Jones.

The Synthesizer Band’s unique program of five selections will range from the very traditional Lacrymosa from Mozart’s Requiem Mass, to a dramatic rendition of “Africa,” made popular in the ‘80’s by the pop group, Toto, and will also include two original compositions. A special arrangement featuring vocalist Josh Marois, whose voice will be electronically transformed to sound like a full choir will highlight the evening.

Choral Union, Dec. 16
The Schoolcraft College Choral Union will perform a choral concert entitled, "A Winter's Tale" featuring choral music and poetry readings that capture the spirit of the holiday season on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Forum Building on the college’s Livonia campus. A suggested, but not required, admission donation of one canned or boxed non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, would be appreciated.
