Community is invited to participate in activities celebrating Earth Day on April 10

Everyone is invited to  join the Schoolcraft College campus community in our proud tradition of annually celebrating Earth Day. This year activities are scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, 2012, from noon - 4 p.m. in the VisTa Tech Center on the college's main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads.  Participation is free and open to the public.

at 1 p.m. Keynote speaker, Marty Essen, multiple award-winning author and lecturer will present "Around the World in 90 Minutes," a high-energy show that includes facts, photographs and stories of his travels to all seven continents.

Various earth-friendly and “green” organizations will have representatives available to speak with fairgoers about current environmental and conservation initiatives.  Organizations that will be present include the Detroit Zoological Society, Greening of Detroit, Michigan State University Tollgate Education Center, the Detroit Audobon Society, Friends of the Rouge, the Electric Car Club and Michigan Electric Vehicle Show, REI and many others.

Guests will also have the opportunity view student poster presentations and visual arts competition entries.  Student entries will be judged based on several factors, including how their entry represents the Schoolcraft College Earth Day 2012 theme, "Biodiversity–The Variety of Living Things on Our Planet."  Winners of each category will be awarded a $250 Schoolcraft College Foundation scholarship.

In the spirit of environmental sustainability, the first 200 guests will be given a Colorado Blue Spruce sapling.  Various raffle items will also be awarded.

The purpose of Earth Day is to spark environmental awareness and activism through a broad range of events and activities.  Important Earth Day causes have included recycling and clean energy initiatives.  Started in 1970, Earth Day has over one billion participants worldwide.
