Schoolcraft College hosts several free concerts in December
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 - Tribute to Donald Morelock
Former students will come together in a special tribute concert to Donald Morelock, retired music faculty member and artistic director of the college's Wednesday Noon Concert Series and Friday Evening Recital Series. An extraordinary teacher and performer in his own right, Morelock retired this year after 44 years at Schoolcraft College. The concert is free and will begin at noon in the VisTaTech Center and will be followed by a reception honoring Morelock.
Friday, December 9, 2011 - Bach Festival Honors Recital
This all-Bach program features performances by young piano students who auditioned for the opportunity to perform. The recital is free and begins at 7 p.m. in the Presentation Room in the VisTaTech Center.
Friday, December 9, 2011 - Now Winter Nights Enlarge
Choral and instrumental music selections will be performed by Schoolcraft College's Choral Union, Chamber Singers, and Wind Ensemble groups. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the DiPonio Room of the VisTaTech Center. The concert is free, however donations are appreciated.
Sunday, December 11, 2011 - A Jolly Merry Christmas
Seasonal choral and instrumental music will be performed by Schoolcraft College's Chamber Singers and the Brass Ensemble. The concert begins at 3 p.m. and will be held at the Old Newburg Methodist Church at Greenmead Historical Park. The concert is free, however donations are appreciated.
Monday, December 12, 2011 - First Ever
For the first time ever, Schoolcraft College's Synthesizer Ensembles will perform in their own dedicated concert. The program will also include several special guests performing. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center. The concert is free, however donations are appreciated.
Thursday, December 15; Friday, December 16 and Monday, December 19, 2011 - Piano Academy Student Christmas Recitals
Piano students, ages 6 -18, enrolled in the Schoolcraft College Piano Academy will perform. Each evening will feature different students performing different selections. All of the recitals are free and begin at 7 p.m. in the Forum.
Friday, December 16, 2011 - Musician Clinic
Guest artist Don Owens, professor emeritus of jazz studies, conducting and ensembles at Northwestern University, will conduct a clinic with local high school jazz ensembles. The clinic is free and will be held from 3 - 6 p.m. at Farmington Harrison High School in Farmington.
Saturday, December 17, 2011 - Musician Clinics
Guest artist Don Owens, professor emeritus of jazz studies, conducting and ensembles at Northwestern University, will conduct clinics at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with school groups, community groups and the general public. A pick-up jazz ensemble will be formed with musicians that attend. Participants should bring their own instruments. The clinics are free and will be held at the Alexander Music Building at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.
Sunday, December 18, 2011 - Open Rehearsal
The Schoolcraft College Jazz Program and the Eastern Michigan Jazz Ensemble will hold an open rehearsal with guest artist Don Owens, professor emeritus of jazz studies, conducting and ensembles at Northwestern University. Students of all ages are invited to bring their instruments and sit in with the college performers. The rehearsal is free and will be held from 3 - 6 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center.
Monday, December 19, 2011 - Composers Workshop
Guest artist Don Owens, professor emeritus of jazz studies, conducting and ensembles at Northwestern University, will conduct a composers workshop from 10:30 a.m. - noon in the VisTaTech Center. Participants should bring their own instruments (access to pianos and drums will be provided).
Monday, December 19, 2011 - Musical Skills for Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble Clinic
Instructors and performers from Schoolcraft College, Eastern Michigan University and Northwestern University will provide insight and examples of the roles each player has in a combo or ensemble. Participants should bring their own instruments (access to pianos and drums will be provided). The clinic will be held from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center.
Monday, December 19, 2011 - Jazz Concert
The Schoolcraft College Jazz Program and the Eastern Michigan Jazz Ensemble will hold an open rehearsal with guest artist Don Owens, professor emeritus of jazz studies, conducting and ensembles at Northwestern University, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the VisTaTech Center. Tickets are $8 for general admission; $5 for students with i.d. and senior citizens; children under 12 are free. Tickets can be purchased at www.scboxoffice.com or in the College Bookstore.
