Course Description
This course is designed for the Health Information Technology student to review methods by which a healthcare organization measures, assesses and improves the quality of healthcare services. Topics explored include traditional quality assessment, performance improvement methodologies, utilization/resource management, risk management, infection control, credentialing and the role of oversight agencies.

Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Determine the components of a comprehensive quality management program.
- Monitor organization-wide health record documentation guidelines.
- Apply policies and procedures to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and standards.
- Report compliance findings according to organizational policy.
- Maintain the accuracy and completeness of the patient record as defined by organizational policy and external regulations and standards.
- Assist in preparing the organization for accreditation, licensing, and/or certification surveys.
- Organize and present data for quality management, utilization management, risk management, and other related studies.
- Abstract and report data for facility-wide quality management and performance improvement programs.
- Use quality improvement tools and techniques to monitor, report and improve processes.
- Perform utilization management activities using screening criteria.
- Analyze clinical data to identify trends that demonstrate quality, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare.
- Organize and contribute to work teams and committees.
- Apply and promote ethical standards of practice.
